Despite its global religious significance, the Baptism Site operates within a highly competitive regional context, with neighbouring destinations in Jordan and Israel competing for religious and cultural tourism.
The client faced a key challenge: how to better understand the socio-economic profile, motivations, and behaviours of inbound tourists in order to design targeted strategies that would increase visitation and encourage repeat visits.
This required a detailed assessment of both general inbound tourism and religious tourism flows, including cross-border dynamics, visitor segmentation, and travel patterns. Additionally, identifying opportunities to elevate the site’s positioning beyond a single-visit destination was critical to driving longer-term tourism growth.
grmc was engaged to deliver a hospitality market advisory, focused on assessing demand drivers and identifying strategies to strengthen the site’s appeal and visitation.
grmc delivered a comprehensive hospitality market assessment, combining primary and secondary research to develop a robust understanding of tourism dynamics in Jordan and the wider region.
The study analysed inbound tourism trends, with a particular focus on religious tourism flows to Jordan and Israel, alongside visitor demographics, preferences, and spending patterns. Primary research was conducted to validate key demand drivers and identify gaps in the current offering.
In addition, grmc undertook targeted outreach to international religious tour operators across the US, Europe, and Asia to gather first-hand insights into the expectations, preferences, and travel behaviours of religious tourists. This provided a more granular understanding of demand drivers and booking dynamics across key source markets.
Complementing this, grmc conducted benchmarking of comparable global pilgrimage destinations, identifying best practices, successful programming concepts, and destination management strategies that could be adapted and implemented at the Baptism Site. Building on these insights, grmc developed strategic recommendations to enhance the site’s attractiveness and competitiveness, including partnership opportunities with religious institutions and the Ministry of Tourism, as well as the curation of cultural and educational programming to enrich the visitor experience.
The engagement provided the client with a clear, insight-led strategy to strengthen the Baptism Site’s positioning within the regional religious tourism landscape. By aligning tourism development initiatives with visitor preferences, global best practices, and market dynamics, recommendations supported increased visitation potential and improved visitor engagement. The proposed partnerships and programming initiatives created a pathway to drive repeat visits and extend the site’s appeal beyond traditional pilgrimage travel.
Overall, the study enabled a more structured and internationally informed approach to tourism development, supporting the long-term growth and sustainability of the destination.
