As global focus on methane reduction intensifies, livestock emissions particularly from ruminants have emerged as a critical area of intervention. For Sumitomo Corporation Middle East (SCME), evaluating this opportunity required more than a high-level market scan; it demanded a detailed understanding of how the ecosystem operates across multiple geographies.
The study focused on key markets including Saudi Arabia and Egypt, while also incorporating a broader regional lens across MENA and the Horn of Africa.
A central challenge was the fragmented and evolving nature of the value chain, spanning:
In addition, the regulatory environment and verification frameworks for emissions reduction remain underdeveloped in parts of the region, requiring careful mapping to assess feasibility and scalability.
grmc structured the engagement as a full value-chain and market opportunity assessment, combining primary stakeholder engagement with detailed secondary research across MENA and the Horn of Africa.
The approach began with a comprehensive mapping of the ruminant emissions ecosystem, covering upstream inputs such as raw feed additives, through to feed conversion, livestock farming, and downstream meat and dairy markets. This was extended to include the emerging carbon ecosystem, incorporating methane reduction schemes, carbon credit mechanisms, and verification frameworks.
In parallel, grmc assessed the regulatory landscape across the target geographies, identifying relevant government bodies, approval processes, and policy frameworks impacting feed production, livestock operations, and emissions-related initiatives. This provided clarity on market entry requirements and potential constraints.
A bottom-up market sizing exercise was then undertaken to quantify the opportunity across each stage of the value chain. This included evaluation of existing market sizes, identification of key players, and assessment of growth potential across both physical supply chains and carbon-related markets.
Key components of the methodology included:
The study provided SCME with a structured and actionable view of a complex, multi-layered market.
By translating a fragmented and emerging sector into a clear analytical framework, grmc enabled SCME to evaluate potential business models, partnerships, and investment pathways with greater confidence.
